It’s never easy starting out or transitioning to a new career. It can be difficult and trying at times. For those of us working in automotive repair, there is no set path on arriving at this career trajectory. If you have an interest in anything automotive, this is the perfect industry to live out your passion. Our team of enthusiasts at Mad Hatter Muffler and Brakes in Omaha, Nebraska are joyful to share our experiences and love for the work we do. To give you some idea of the work that goes on, here are some jobs and responsibilities of a typical shop.
When you visit a shop, your car is assigned to a Technician. They proceed to inspect the car before performing a diagnosis. Based on the diagnosis, the technician will make recommendations to the Service Advisor in their report. Once work is approved, the technician will perform work on the car until completion. Working as Technician can be rewarding and lucrative, but it can also be stressful. You will need to learn everyday to stay on top of new procedures and technologies.
As the point of contact for the customer, the Service Advisor speaks to them on their cars issues. Once an appointment is scheduled, they coordinate with their assigned Technicians on what the car is coming in for. Base on the appointment, the Advisor will take a block of time for the Technician to complete the work. Furthermore, the Service Advisor also coordinates with the Parts Manager to allocate parts when writing up the estimate for work order cost. Being a Service Advisor is great for people that have a history helping customers.
Serving both a sales and technical role, the Parts Manager handles all material coming in and going out of the shop. It is their responsibility to take and inspect all part orders, and file all forms accordingly. In addition, they assist the technician in looking up parts in a database when a part cannot be identified with visual inspection. The Parts Manager also assists the Service Advisor in writing the parts portion of a work estimate. At times, they will also work with customers to find the part they are looking for.
After the technician finishes work on the car, it is then handed over the Detailer for a deep cleaning. The Detailer’s primary responsibility is to ensure the washed and vacuumed before being returned to the customer. This includes a thorough cleaning of the wheels and tires, giving a nice polish before leaving the shop. Furthermore, a Detailer also polishes headlights that become clouded by ultraviolet rays.
